Jaydie Putterman

More information

Embark on the theme of his art and Jaydie Putterman will become animated. For him, taking photographs is seeing, therefore he takes them.

Born in 1945 in America, he was brought up in New York. Given his first camera at the age of five, he subsequently studied at Parsons School of Design and The New School and taught photography at universities in New York and Paris.

With his wife Rosalynde, he moved in 1973 to France, where they have raised their family.
Jaydie's photographic output has covered a broad range of subject matter. In his professional portfolio you could find anything from Formula One editorial shots to magazine covers and advertising work.
Various institutions have integrated considerable numbers of his photographs in their permanent collections: The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, The Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., to name but a few.
His exhibitions span four continents; twelve published books feature his long-term projects, including a year with the New York City Ballet, a twelve month study of life in Sri Lanka, and reportage of street games in New York. He went on to create an in-depth observation of the working lives of two NYPD officers, leading to the book 'POLICE'.
The last two major projects are a true focus of Jaydie's passion for documenting those whose lives has made a contribution to the greater good. 'TALENTS AND CONSCIENCES OF EUROPE' includes over one hundred individuals from Mother Teresa to Judge Giovanni Falcone, from King Juan Carlos 1st to Peter Ustinov. It resulted in the photographer's first multi-media publication, as a book, CD-ROM, website and exhibition.
The current project portraits and documents all those who have orbited the Earth, in their respective roles in space exploration. With the aid of UNESCO, the results will be distributed to a million educational institutions. It is Jaydie's sincere belief that these space explorers will set an example as role models to the youth of today.
While he is an excellent and committed photographer, Jaydie is above all a man concerned with things positive. "Photography is a passport that can take you wherever you dream to be. Once there, the goal is to find graphic solutions for visual problems that are devoid of all negative connotations."

Jaydie Putterman, the man by Pascal Avot

Whatever the place, the time, the weather or the occasion, he is never without his camera. He eats with it on the table. He drives with it on his knees. There is no known cure: Jaydie Putterman is obsessed by taking pictures. As a clear-thinking artist, he knows that art is a matter for artisans. He knows that beauty is another name for determination. He understands that he will never be able to stop taking pictures. This American is far more in love with Europe than most Europeans. This strange and straightforward man is an integral part of our culture.
