| Europe is an alliance of nations. One of the principal consequences of the alliance is that common measures need to be adopted regarding the rest of the world. Europe's credibility is going to depend on its ability to settle external conflicts. Some men have already set out to demonstrate that in setting up the Community they have produced a new diplomatic force capable of giving strong support, ever ready to advocate reconciliation and organize it if required. Peter Carrington is one of these men. In Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Yugoslavia he has worked for reconciliation, always trying to find a way out both human and humanist. |
