There are many countries which are disunited. We talk a great deal about those where there are civil wars, where brothers spill their brothers' blood. We have less to say about those where no shots are fired, but where minds are wounded, where souls cry out in the despair of separation. Belgium is one of those countries. Hugo Claus looks at this country, which is his country, and tries to understand why eyes look daggers and tongues are barbed. This writer is respected. Why? Because he is tolerant. Just with words he is causing the first signs of a break in the clouds to appear and nurturing the still delicate beginnings of something heartening.
