The earth is covered in forests. In some there are men and civilizations. In the teeming forest depths these men have evolved cultures, languages, codes, myths and knowledge, song and religion. Should all this be lost? If you fell the trees, despoil the forest, you expel the inhabitants. Expropriate them. Exile them. Trample their souls. At best, this is spiritual genocide. Marcus Colchester has lived among the Sanema in the Venezuelan forest. He has initiated a Forest Peoples Programme to protect them and the trees which give them shelter. Over there, every time a tree is felled, a human being dies.
