| He chose the vertical path, the steep slope, the hard road: Europe. Jacques Delors refuses to be immured in those Parisian mazes where whisperings and rumours echo and re-echo. He has gone elsewhere, where his concern is an entire continent. He has made this crazy - or intelligent - wager that to serve his own country well, he must serve dozens of countries at the same time, get them all together, get them all thinking together again, and produce something conceived on a broader time scale than the present day. He could become France's number one politician; meanwhile, he is the first wholly European politician. Without entirely being aware of it, he is inventing a new type of statesman, a new way of making history. |
