| A mayor is someone close to you, a man who almost lives in the same house as the people he is responsible for. He sees them all the time. If something has to be done, he can do it, because he knows what to do, because he knows the people involved. Arnoldo Farina had the wonderful idea of launching an international initiative to make Mayors the Children's Champions. President of the Italian branch of Unicef, he is trying to make mayors all over the world aware of this problem. Gentlemen, he tells them, if you do not concern yourselves with those children playing in the street whom you can see from your office window, you will never do anything worth doing. More and more town halls are getting the message. More and more of them are taking up the cudgels on behalf of the world's youngest citizens. |
