| We should not forget that in three quarters of the world journalism is a dangerous profession. Governments are sensitive about it - to put it mildly. They only like to hear themselves praised. If a journalist seems to show a little doubt, if his taste for investigation exceeds his taste for flattery, if he is caught red-handed asking awkward questions, prison is not far away - or the firing squad. You are not a journalist, you are a dissident, say the rules of dictatorship. Headed by Peter Galliner, the International Press Institute defends all those reporters, newsmen and critics anywhere in the world who try to tell us things that others would like to hide from us. This man has done much for the freedom to bother tyrants, the freedom to unmask them. |
