Famine in Biafra, Black September in Jordan. Earthquakes in Peru and Guatemala. Lebanon, Syria, Kurdistan, Eritrea. Vietnam, Cambodia, Uruguay, El Salvador, Honduras. Together with his teams from Médecins sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde, Bernard Kouchner has followed the trail of catastrophe, pursuing it by helicopter, by boat and on foot across the five continents. Sometimes he managed to hold it at bay (as in Operation 'Un bateau pour le Vietnam', when 900 lives were saved, 2500 people were given hospital treatment and 1000 tonnes of food was delivered to Phnom Penh). He is still active today, as France's Minister of Health and Humanitarian Action. Thanks to him and people like him, who campaign for increased aid and speedier distribution, it sometimes seems as if the tide of catastrophe is receding a little.
