There is no end to the lessons which the building of Europe can teach us. About the working of its institutions, the compatibility of mentalities, the making of history together, we are discovering things every day that we could not have imagined twenty years ago; things which only experience can teach and which demand that we hand them on. If we want this venture to become a culture, we must teach them in our turn. Teaching Europe to the Europeans was for a long time Jerzy Lukaszewski's business, when he was Rector of the College of Europe from 1972 to 1990. Which is another way of saying that he taught those who in years to come will reshape the whole continent. "Europe will be built by those who know it, who love it and who believe in it," he says.
