This is a man who has done so many things that he seems to have lived ten lives or to be ten men rolled into one. He organized an escape route for Jews to Switzerland, formed resistance groups; he was arrested by the Germans, he escaped. He argued with Albert Einstein, he defended conscientious objection. He got 12 000 housing units built for the hungry and the cold, he set up communities to give shelter to the poor. He has met the great and the powerful and talked to them about the little people, the people who are alone and disconsolate. He has been the big brother to millions in times of need - for a day, for an hour or for ever. Abbé Pierre personifies what a priest can be: an exception to selfishness. Only the religion which embraces us all is the religion of God.
