| The red cross would be an appropriate symbol for the twentieth century, a century in which violence has been taken to new extremes, whole nations crushed, whole generations uprooted, whole races decimated. But the century has also seen magnificent new relief agencies emerge, witnessed courageous acts of salvation. Helen Potamianos has tried with all her might to tip the balance in the right direction. In 1938 she joined the Red Cross and has a been a member ever since. She has never abandoned her vocation to serve, or her conviction that we can and must do more. She speaks five languages (help is needed everywhere), sleeps no more than four hours a night (no peace for the good, never mind the wicked). Then, if there is any time left over for herself, she sits down at her piano and plays - well. |
