| Of all the functions writers fulfil there is none more philanthropic than conveying great ideas to the public at large, translating the sublime into everyday language, the language of the man in the street, giving him access to the sublime and, ultimately, the ability to reproduce it. This is what José Saramago does. As a writer with a strong sense of social responsibility, he brings philosophy to people who would never normally come into contact with it but who, once they have, handle it as if they had been born to it. His writing is like a ladder: it leads you up to a higher plane. |
