Pain is the spirit’s worst enemy. It besets it, bruises it, then tears it, burns it and, finally, destroys it. For thousands of years mankind has been host to this infernal tenant, which prevents human beings from living without worry and from dying with dignity. The twentieth century has failed to overcome it. But a few individuals have tried to encircle it and, where possible, to silent it. Since the fifties Dame Cicely Saunders has been trying to contain the labyrinth of pain. In 1967 she founded saint Christopher’s Hospice, which specializes in comforting the terminally ill. She frees their bodies from the shackles of pain, so that they can say farewell with a smile, stops their last breath from being a scream. The job she does is the gentlest, the most delicate and the most difficult of all.
