The East German secret police had decided to eliminate Friedrich Schorlemmer, pastor of Wittenberg. He advocated reunification, he was listened to and respected, his faith was sincere and incorruptible; so he would have to die, and the sooner the better. However, there was no one in the Stasi who wanted to take on the job, for whoever was to assassinate Schorlemmer would, in a way, be doing a job on himself: you cannot put a knife into hope without wounding yourself. For lack of volunteers, the murder never took place. Germany was reunified. Pastor Schorlemmer is still with us. And the Stasi has gone.
