| Beauty is not the exclusive province of art critics. Wolfgang Thierse, a graduate in aesthetic philosophy, did not content himself with admiring paintings or symphonies. He wanted the world to be a slightly more beautiful place. East Germany's totalitarianism was ugly. So he stood up for human rights. The wall between the two Germanies was ugly. So he stood up for reunification. Can an aesthete, then, be an effective politician? It has to be said that of late the map of Europe has become more pleasant to look at: more balanced, more harmonious in short. |
