| Gaston Thorn was one of the first true Europeans. Born in Luxembourg, as a teenager he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to a reform camp; as a student, he campaigned for closer links between his fellow students. Later he worked as a lawyer, writer and politician. He was President of the Commission of the European Communities from 1981 to 1985 - a crucial period, in which the Community of the Twelve took on its present shape. He encouraged and oversaw the preparations for one of the most important events of the century. His watchwords are freedom and democracy. |
