| "I believe that the books we read in childhood have a profound influence on us." As a child Crispin Tickell read a tale of a king who grew rich by building hideous little yellow houses. One day he decided to have them destroyed so that the green fields they had displaced could grow again. The moral of the story was that it is much more difficult to transform hideous yellow houses into green fields than to transform green fields into hideous yellow houses. The young Englishman never forgot this tale. Very early in his career as a diplomat he took an interest in climatology, ecological observation and preservation of the balance of natural forces. Today he heads many institutes set up to respect life and ensure it is respected, to protect the earth from the aggression of a civilization off the rails. Sometimes, a little fairy story may change the shape of the world, and give a moral twist to history. |
