When you love a people, you write its history. You tell what you have experienced with it, what sufferings and hopes you have shared, endured and built with it, as though that whole people were contained in you. Joan Tsatsos encompasses the whole Greek people within herself. A member of the resistance during the Axis occupation, she was to return again and again to that tragic and passionate period in her work as a writer and poet. After Greece was liberated, she was active in social and humanitarian organizations and published a moving book describing the lives of every person executed in Greece during the war. "Almost every Greek woman lived the life that I lived. I believe it is our duty to preserve that life in our memories." For centuries poets have known that one man has the same value as all mankind. That we are the sum of the same emotion, repeated in each of us.
