Victor Vasarely is the initiator of a unique aesthetic adventure against the grain of every tradition. Born in Hungary, now a French citizen, he has set himself the task of giving the cities of our time an artistic embellishment which is all their own, designed for them, fitting them, resembling them, rendering them eloquent; turning the lofty walls of modernity into direct, homogeneous and unquestionable museums, making their busy streets not only the thing depicted but the place where it is exhibited. The result is painting in high colour, mathematical, a discreet abstraction which acts as an interpreter of the times in which we live. In Vasarely's work our age speaks the language of our age, his work is the environment, his embellishment its existence. As, in their time, Greece, Rome and Venice. Archaeologists of the fourth millennium will discover Vasarelys just as today we dig up buried frescos which explain things to us that the written word neglected to say.
