| We have a responsibility to listen to cries for help from people in far-off places, coming as they do from fellow human beings. But we have an even greater responsibility to listen to the cries of those around us: the very existence of poverty in our own neighbourhood, town or country should be enough to make us sit up and listen. It is a sign we cannot ignore - a challenge. Alvine de Vos, a former diplomat, now President of the Fourth World association, acts as a mouthpiece for the poor in our societies. She makes sure their voices are heard, urges us to respond and distributes what we give. Sometimes, society is so divided and dialogue between rich and poor so difficult that, even though we speak the same language, we need interpreters. |
