| Germany is a nation with a destiny which is far from commonplace, eventful, both glorious and troubled, harrowing and promising. Its history, recent and less recent, is powerful, tragic, rich and impressive. In this century all of Europe's countries have made their mark, but Germany will have doubly impressed itself on our memories: through the conflagration of Hitlerism and the crumbling of the Berlin Wall. The office of President of the Federal Republic is not a restful one. Whatever happens, he has to keep his calm and his sense of humanity. Amid geopolitical earthquakes Richard von Weizsäcker has never budged from this amiable stance, from that dignity on which his reputation rests. He has been intimately involved in his country's rebirth. His gentle smile is reflected in Germany's quiet confidence today. |
