| Luxembourg is at the centre of European life. In this country of modest dimensions, events of continental scale with global repercussions take place every day. Pierre Werner put his stamp on and intensified Luxembourg's European role. Through his years in government service, his much admired calm and moderation, all the energy he invested in a Community monetary union foreshadowing the ECU. And perhaps also through reading Claudel, Dostoievsky, Bergson, Péguy and Dante. For the first thing you ask of a founder of Europe is to be thoroughly familiar with European culture. |
